The Art of Function

Christopher Raeburn has built a distinctive reputation around the relationship between fashion, functionality and reworked materials. His menswear brings together technical clothing, military references and contemporary sportswear, creating pieces that feel practical while remaining highly considered. For this collection, Raeburn looked towards the work and adventures of Tom Harrisson, the English anthropologist known for his time in Borneo. That inspiration brought together mid-century silhouettes, military references and influences from tribal textiles, translated into a modern London menswear wardrobe.

Relaxed Proportions

The silhouette was one of the strongest features of the collection. Oversized tops, wide-leg trousers and generous shorts created a relaxed shape, giving the clothing a sense of movement and ease. Rather than relying on sharply fitted tailoring, Raeburn explored proportion through layering and volume. Jackets could sit over loose separates, while cropped and elongated pieces created different levels within the outfit. The result was athletic without becoming conventional sportswear; a balance that has become central to the Raeburn aesthetic. Contemporary reports highlighted the collection’s relaxed proportions, oversized tops, baggy shorts and functional everyday separates.

Utility with a Fashion Perspective

Functionality remained at the heart of the collection. Lightweight jackets, bomber silhouettes, outerwear, utility pockets and technical fabrics gave the clothing a practical character. Camouflage appeared alongside cleaner blocks of colour, allowing military references to become part of a contemporary wardrobe rather than dominating the look. Graphic T-shirts and sweatshirts added a more casual element, while layered jackets and outerwear provided the structure. This combination of everyday clothing and technical design is particularly effective in Raeburn’s work. A garment can have an obvious practical purpose while still becoming one of the defining pieces of an outfit.

 Colour, Texture and Contrast

The palette moved between khaki, olive, navy, black, grey and lighter neutral shades, with stronger colour accents appearing across selected pieces. Texture also played an important role. Technical fabrics were contrasted with softer jersey and knitwear, while camouflage and graphic surfaces interrupted otherwise clean silhouettes. These contrasts gave the collection a distinctly modern feel. The clothing remained functional, but pattern, colour and construction prevented it from becoming purely utilitarian.

The Raeburn Portrait

For CARRO Studio, the portrait becomes an opportunity to look beyond the runway and focus on the individual character of the clothing. A portrait captures the way a jacket sits on the shoulders, the proportion of a trouser leg, the layering of fabrics and the smaller details that can disappear during a fast-moving catwalk presentation. It also records the personality of the model and the attitude created through styling. In Raeburn’s case, this is particularly important because the garments are designed around movement and function. The photography allows those qualities to become visible, from the volume of outerwear to the relaxed attitude of the sportswear-inspired pieces.

CARRO Studio Behind the Lens

CARRO Studio’s photography documents the collection through both fashion portraiture and detail. The images become a visual record of Raeburn’s approach to contemporary menswear, highlighting the balance between utility and design. The camera brings out the relationship between silhouette and personality: oversized proportions become part of the portrait, technical details become graphic elements, and outerwear takes on a strong sculptural presence. It is this combination of fashion and character that makes portrait photography particularly suited to Christopher Raeburn’s work.

Adventure as a Design Language

Christopher Raeburn’s collection demonstrated how ideas of exploration, military clothing and travel can be transformed into modern fashion. The references provided a starting point, but the finished clothing remained firmly contemporary. Relaxed proportions, functional outerwear, camouflage, technical details and sportswear influences created a wardrobe built for movement. At the same time, the attention to fabric, colour and construction ensured that practicality never came at the expense of visual impact. Through CARRO Studio’s lens, these qualities become part of the story; capturing not only the clothes themselves, but the adventurous, functional spirit that defines Christopher Raeburn’s menswear.
