Celebrating New Fashion Talent

The Northern Youth Fashion Show brought together emerging fashion talent from across the North of England, creating a platform where student design, creative collaboration and contemporary fashion could take centre stage. At the heart of the event was a rare appearance by Anna Wintour, then Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue and Artistic Director of Condé Nast. She joined The Guardian editor Katharine Viner for a Q&A before taking her place to watch the designers and students presented on the catwalk.

Emerging Talent

The show was organised by HARD Magazine, a University of York fashion and culture publication, and brought together students from eight northern institutions, including the University of York, Leeds College of Art, Newcastle College, Hull College and Liverpool John Moores University. The emphasis was firmly on new creative voices. Young designers were encouraged to create clothing that was thought-provoking and innovative, with the event presenting fashion as a meeting point for design, music, performance and visual culture. Rather than positioning emerging fashion within the traditional London fashion circuit, the show highlighted the breadth of creative talent developing across the North.

Anna Wintour in York

Anna Wintour’s presence gave the evening an international fashion perspective while keeping the focus on the next generation. During the event, she spoke with students about her career and creative life, offering an insight into the fashion industry from one of its most recognisable editorial figures. Her appearance was particularly significant because the event was designed to give northern designers greater visibility and challenge the idea that fashion opportunity is centred exclusively in London. The atmosphere around the show combined the energy of a student-led creative project with the scale and attention normally associated with a major fashion event.

Fashion, Music and Performance

The presentation extended beyond clothing. Live performances formed part of the evening, with artists including Billie Marten, Friendly Fires and Metronomy contributing to a broader creative environment. BAFTA-winning filmmaker Adam Curtis was also involved in the production, helping the organisers develop an experience that moved away from a conventional catwalk format. This combination of fashion, music, film and performance gave the event a distinctly contemporary identity.

A Platform for Northern Creativity

The show also carried a charitable purpose, raising funds for organisations supporting refugees, including the Xavier Project and Refugee Action York. The University of York later reported that the event raised more than £30,000. That combination of fashion and community gave the project an additional dimension. The catwalk became not simply a showcase for clothing, but a platform for young creative talent and social engagement.

CARRO Studio Behind the Lens

For CARRO Studio, photographing the event meant capturing more than the presence of a famous fashion editor. The photographs become a record of the atmosphere surrounding the show — the anticipation, personalities, fashion, movement and creative energy of an event built around emerging designers. Anna Wintour’s appearance provides an important visual focal point, but the wider story belongs to the young designers and students whose work formed the centre of the evening. The Northern Youth Fashion Show demonstrated the importance of creating opportunities for emerging designers to be seen beyond established fashion capitals. With students from across the region, established media figures, music and film combined within one event, the show presented fashion as a collaborative creative discipline. Through CARRO Studio’s photography, those moments become part of an archive of emerging talent; capturing a generation of designers, creatives and students at the beginning of their fashion journeys.
